Rob McElhenney has revealed to talkSPORT that Wrexham are in talks over a deal to bring Arthur Okonkwo back to the club.
The 22-year-old goalkeeper is a free agent after being released by Arsenal.
Okonkwo spent the majority of last season on loan at Wrexham, following the sudden departure of Premier League veteran Ben Foster.
He filled the former England international’s boots and gloves superbly and played a major role in their rise to League One, as Phil Parkinson’s side secured back-to-back promotions.
The young glovesman featured in 40 games in all competitions, keeping 16 clean sheets in the league and only conceding 35 goals – with his performances seeing him named League Two goalkeeper of the season.
Despite his heroics at the Racecourse, he failed to be offered a contract extension in north London, with Okonkwo one of 22 players named on the Gunners’ release list at the end of the campaign.
But Arsenal’s loss could now be Wrexham’s gain, as McElhenney told talkSPORT they are keen to bring him back to north Wales.
Asked if there is a good chance Okonkwo will be back at Wrexham this summer, he said: “There’s a very good chance.
“We’re talking to Arthur actively right now, we know he wants to come back to Wrexham and we definitely want him.
“It’s just about working out the right deal that works for everybody.”
Asked about Wrexham’s other transfer plans for the summer, with excitement high at the club after their successive promotion seasons, the American co-chairman revealed he is due at the club soon to discuss possible deals.
“We’re about to find that out this week,” McElhenney added.
“We go to Wrexham very soon and we’re going to sit down and talk about that with Phil [Parkinson].”
Okonkwo quickly established himself as the club’s No.1 choice following his arrival last season.
In total, 36 of his outings came in League Two, where he kept 14 clean sheets to help Wrexham return to League One for the first time since 2005.
McElhenney was speaking from the Philadelphia Phillies dugout before he threw the ceremonial first pitch at the MLB London Series against New York Mets.
The two-game series is played at a completely transformed London Stadium – home of West Ham United.
It was the Wrexham chief’s first trip to the ground, and he hopes it won’t be too long until he’s back – watching the Welsh club compete in the Premier League.
“This is my first time in the London Stadium – it’s gorgeous,” he said.
“West Ham plays here? I know it’ll be a few years, but hopefully we’ll see Wrexham play here against West Ham at some point.
