Saudi Arabian clubs are reportedly preparing a world-record bid to sign Brazilian winger Vinícius Júnior from Real Madrid, aiming to capitalize on stalled contract negotiations between the player and the Spanish giants. The proposed deal would eclipse Neymar’s historic €222 million move to PSG in 2017, which currently stands as the most expensive transfer in football history.
According to reports, the Saudi Pro League—backed by the Public Investment Fund (PIF)—has set its sights on Vinícius as a marquee signing. The frontrunner among the clubs is said to be Al Ahli, although other PIF-backed teams are also monitoring the situation. The proposed transfer fee could reach as high as €350 million (approximately £302 million), a staggering figure that would smash all previous records.
Vinícius Júnior, 24, remains under contract with Real Madrid until 2027, and the deal includes a €1 billion release clause. Despite earlier reports suggesting that a verbal agreement had been reached for an extension until 2030, recent developments indicate that talks have cooled. Real Madrid is reportedly reluctant to meet Vinícius’ wage demands, which could be as high as €30 million per year, including bonuses. The club has made it clear that no player—including Vinícius—will be allowed to earn more than new arrival Kylian Mbappé, whose net annual salary is reported to be around €31 million.
The Saudi proposal reportedly includes a five-year contract worth up to €1 billion in total compensation. This would average about €200 million per year, tax-free, making Vinícius the highest-paid footballer in history. In practical terms, he could be earning the equivalent of £475,000 per day, or roughly £3.3 million per week.
Despite this financial temptation, the situation is far from resolved. Vinícius has often expressed his love for Real Madrid and has been a fan favorite at the Bernabéu. He played a pivotal role in the club’s recent successes, including their La Liga and UEFA Champions League triumphs. However, the delay in formalizing a new contract could open the door to one of the most shocking transfers in modern football.
From a strategic perspective, the Saudi Pro League is continuing its aggressive campaign to attract top talent from Europe. Having already signed stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Neymar, and Riyad Mahrez, the league is positioning itself as a serious destination for world-class players. Securing a player like Vinícius—who is entering his prime and is one of the most marketable athletes in the world—would be a massive statement of intent.
While Real Madrid are expected to reject any offers short of the full release clause, the allure of such an unprecedented financial package could pressure both the club and player into reconsidering. For now, all eyes are on the ongoing negotiations, with the football world waiting to see whether loyalty to Madrid will prevail—or if Saudi Arabia’s wealth will tip the balance.
