UNEXPECTED: Payne Haas Fires Back as Broncos Teammate Dumped Over Dig at Coach Michael Maguire

Broncos Bombshell: Taupau Axed After Secret Swipe at Coach Maguire Sparks Locker Room Turmoil

Tensions continue to simmer at the Brisbane Broncos as front-rower Martin Taupau has been released from the club effective immediately, following his involvement in a social media controversy linked to criticism of head coach Michael Maguire.

The drama began when Taupau was caught “liking” a social media post from former NRL player Elijah Taylor. In the post, Taylor reflected on his challenging time under Maguire at the Wests Tigers, citing emotional and physical exhaustion, relentless full-contact training sessions, and inefficient time management. Taylor claimed he often felt drained before matches due to the intensity of Maguire’s methods, suggesting this could be a reason behind the Broncos’ recent struggles. He described the coach’s demeanor as extreme, noting that after a win Maguire was elated, but following a loss, it felt like attending a funeral.

Despite Taupau quickly removing his “like” and issuing a public apology, stating it was not his intention to endorse the criticism and reaffirming his respect for Maguire, the damage was done. Taupau expressed regret, claiming he enjoyed being coached by Maguire and was committed to the team’s success. However, his apology wasn’t enough to satisfy club leadership.

The veteran forward was summoned to face the Broncos’ leadership group on Friday. By Saturday, it was confirmed that Taupau and the club had mutually agreed to part ways, with immediate effect. His departure, which was expected regardless at the end of the 2025 season, was accelerated, and he will not feature in the Broncos’ feeder club Souths Logan’s upcoming match.

Meanwhile, Payne Haas has rejected any talk of unrest within the playing group, defending the coach amid rising scrutiny. However, Taupau’s exit raises further questions about player satisfaction under Maguire’s high-intensity regime and whether deeper issues may be at play behind closed doors.
