The New York Jets are dumping Aaron Rodgers.
The Los Angeles Rams are considering doing the same – with big-time value coming back via trade – with Matthew Stafford.
And now ESPN insider Adam Schefter has floated out that possibility that there might be a connection here.
The New York Jets have officially announced that the four-time MVP is done in The Big Apple. Rodgers, 41, apparently does not want to retire, and teams like the Steelers and the Raiders are considered possible suitors as the future Hall of Famer hangs on to his NFL career by a thread.
But what if Rodgers moved from Broadway to Hollywood?
Schefter is now suggested there’s a chance that the Rams, assuming they are able to trade the expensive Stafford – there is a great deal of buzz that is now connecting Stafford (and his wife Kelly, who very much seems to want to be heard on this matter and most every other matter) – to the New York Giants.
That one is complicated, as the Giants also have a premium pick at the top of this NFL Draft that could be earmarked for a QB like Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward.
But … if Stafford gets traded this offseason, Rodgers would then jump up and be on the Rams’ radar – at least according to Schefter.
“If the Rams couldn’t get a (new contract) deal done with Stafford and decide to trade him, then Aaron Rodgers – in my mind – would be thrilled with the idea of going to Los Angeles,” Schefter said. “The Rams could probably get him at a lower cost than it would be for Matthew Stafford. They’d get draft compensation back for Matthew Stafford. You can see where the Rams would say that might be a more desirable alternative.”
The wild card here is not only in the thoughts of the teams and of the players; it’s also in Schefter’s loosey-goosey style. Is this “reporting”? Or is this “in Adam’s mind”?
It would be helpful for all involved to know that the Rams, the Giants and the Jets have these concepts in their minds, too.
