The 23-year-old struggled to hit the ground running during the four months after his £45million move from Everton in January 2023. However, in his first full season, Gordon won the club’s player of the year award, scoring 12 and providing 11 assists.
It earned Gordon a call-up to England’s Euro 2024 squad. But while Gareth Southgate’s side reached the final – losing 2-1 to Spain, it proved to be a disappointing tournament for Gordon, who played just three minutes in total.
Gordon was also the subject of transfer interest from boyhood club Liverpool. There were talks between the two clubs with Newcastle needing to raise funds to comply with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Gordon, of course, stayed with Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh sold to Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion instead.
As per Mail Online, preliminary talks over a new contract are underway. The winger – also admired by Arsenal -signed a long-term deal when he signed but the length has not been disclosed by the club.
Howe admitted some members of his squad have been unsettled by reports linking them with a move away, and that is likely to include Gordon. Tying the player down to a new contract would be an attempt to draw a line under what has unfolded in the last couple of months and fittingly reward him for his 2023-24 form.
“I’ve seen Anthony come back in a good place,” Howe said two weeks ago. “Especially this past week, he had a really short training period before that first game.
“We put him in as he’s a difference maker, it takes the younger players less time to get up to speed but I think this week he has looked back to his best.
“The Euros will have been an incredible experience for him. The first time that he will have been with England for any length of time and Im sure he’ll have learned, seen and experienced a lot from that.
“Sometimes, we all have this vision of the fairytale ending, you go in and help win your country the tournament at the first time, but life is rarely like that. Anthony will have seen a lot and hopefully use that for next time that he’s involved.”
