Newcastle take swipe at Conor McGregor after spotting him in stands for Arsenal defeat

UFC icon Conor McGregor made a star appearance at St James’ Park, witnessing Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to Newcastle United, as the Gunners’ recent form took another hit.

With their last league victory dating back to October 5 against Southampton, Mikel Arteta’s side now find themselves lagging by seven points behind frontrunners Liverpool and sitting below Nottingham Forest on the table. Arsenal could drop to sixth by the end of the weekend should Aston Villa and Chelsea secure wins in their respective fixtures.

McGregor’s presence came ahead of his Bareknuckle event in Newcastle on Saturday night. The world-famous athlete is no stranger to watching Arsenal this season, prompting a playful response from the Magpies on Instagram.

Drawing upon McGregor’s infamous phrase post his Eddie Alvarez fight in 2016, Newcastle cheekily added, “On this post, we’d like to take this chance to apologise…to absolutely nobody.”

During the post-match presser, questioned whether his squad is losing nerve amidst the title contention pressure, Arteta replied: “I didn’t feel that. I think I would have felt it at the beginning of the game. I didn’t have that feeling. What I did feel was that when we fell behind it we lacked threat and more capacity to go and hurt them.”

“We weren’t consistent enough and when we gave the ball away we were in transition and allowed them to run or sustain attacks. I think we gave 17 or 18 free-kicks which stops the game constantly and that was not a good outcome for us.”
