Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs couldn’t get it done in Super Bowl LIX, falling to the Philadelphia Eagles. Now, the Chiefs have made a few changes to their roster as they try to get back on top next season.
In 2024, Carson Wentz signed a one-year deal with Kansas City to become Mahomes’ backup quarterback. With his contract expiring after the Super Bowl, it appears the Chiefs are moving in a different direction, bringing in former Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Gardner Minshew as the new backup on a one-year deal.
Minshew came into the NFL in 2019 and has played for four different teams. For his career, the former Washington State star has recorded 11,950 passing yards, 68 touchdowns and 34 interceptions.
On Thursday, Minshew and other new players spoke to the media for one of the first times since joining the Chiefs. He revealed how “fired up” he is for joining an organization that has won three Super Bowls in the last six years while mentioning how he wants to learn from Mahomes.
“I’m super fired up to be part of a winning organization and a winning culture,” Minshew said. “I feel like I have so much to learn about how Coach Reid and Pat operate. I look forward to doing whatever I can to contribute and help this team win.”
Minshew also added that he believes he will be a great fit for the Andy Reid-led offense.
“I’ve always been a huge fan of Coach Reid’s offenses,” Minshew added. “I always felt that was something I could do well in. Pat came up in Air Raid, and I did as well.”
