Mikel Arteta gives immediate Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard injury update after Leeds clash

Posted on August 23, 2025 by sportsmars60@gmail.com

Arsenal delivered a dominant performance in their 5–0 win over Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, August 23, 2025, but the result was overshadowed by concerning injuries to two of their most important players: Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard. Manager Mikel Arteta confirmed in his post-match press conference that both players had picked up injuries that could be “significant,” leaving the club and fans anxiously awaiting further medical assessments.

Bukayo Saka, who was once again instrumental in Arsenal’s attacking play and scored one of the goals, was forced off just before the hour mark after appearing to clutch the back of his leg. Arteta later revealed that the winger suffered a muscular issue, likely a hamstring problem, though not on the same side as his previous injury. While Arteta didn’t confirm the severity, he admitted that it was serious enough to warrant immediate scans the following day. Saka’s injury is particularly concerning given his central role in Arsenal’s tactical system and his exceptional consistency over recent seasons.

Martin Ødegaard, meanwhile, sustained a shoulder injury after a fall in the first half. Though he initially tried to play through the discomfort, the Norwegian captain was clearly hindered and was eventually substituted. Arteta confirmed Ødegaard would also undergo scans to determine the extent of the damage. The manager refrained from offering a timeline for either player’s recovery but noted that Arsenal’s medical staff would evaluate both cases urgently.

The timing of these injuries is far from ideal. Arsenal are preparing for a high-stakes clash with Liverpool next weekend, a match that could be pivotal in the early title race. With other players like Kai Havertz, Ben White, and Christian Nørgaard already sidelined, and Gabriel Jesus still recovering from an ACL injury, the growing list of absentees poses a serious challenge to Arteta’s plans.

Speaking after the game, Arteta highlighted the importance of having a well-equipped and deep squad capable of withstanding such setbacks. He praised the performances of some of the younger and rotational players, including Eberechi Eze, who made a strong impression after coming off the bench. Arteta also stressed that injuries are a reality of top-level football, particularly during a congested fixture schedule, and managing them smartly is essential for maintaining momentum.

Despite the injuries, Arsenal’s attacking display against Leeds was impressive. Goals from Saka, Nketiah, Trossard, and Rice capped off a performance that showcased fluid attacking movements and clinical finishing. The result keeps Arsenal near the top of the Premier League table and boosts their confidence ahead of tougher fixtures.

Nevertheless, the injuries to Saka and Ødegaard are a serious concern. Both players are leaders on and off the pitch and crucial to Arsenal’s style of play. Their absence, if prolonged, could have significant implications for the team’s performance in domestic and European competitions. Arteta and Arsenal fans will now be hoping for positive news from the scans, with the club’s immediate and long-term ambitions potentially hinging on the results.
