Just who the best player in the world is right now is open to debate but Arsenal fans will be delighted to see one of their star names above his rival at Liverpool in the top ten.
The Gunners have assembled a squad of talented players in recent seasons and are very much in contention to win the Premier League this season.
Of course, a big part of Arsenal’s success under Mikel Arteta has been the back four and in particular, the two defenders in the middle.
Both Gabriel and William Saliba have been excellent once more this season.
And according to the latest issue of FourFourTwo, one of that duo is in the top ten and now better than Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk.
According to FourFourTwo, Arsenal defender Saliba is one of the best players in the world right now and comes in at number eight.
That is seven positions ahead of Liverpool and Netherlands star Van Dijk.
Now into his 30s, Van Dijk is still a class act but looks to be past the very best form he showed when Liverpool won the title.
Saliba, of course, has been superb for the Gunners since he returned from his loan spell with Marseille.
Saliba is one of three Arsenal players in the top 20 this year, with Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka in there as well.
However, it is Liverpool who hold the upper-hand in general, with the Reds having four players and crucially, Mo Salah the highest ranked Premier League player behind Erling Haaland and Rodri.
Liverpool fans will always argue that Van Dijk is the main man at the back but right now, William Saliba is very much the top dog in defence.
Yes, he needs to ensure he wins trophies and prove he can do things over a long period of time.
But at 22, Saliba looks like he’s on course to become one of the best to ever do it.
Of course, Van Dijk has had a tremendous career himself but on current form and ability, William Saliba is the man right now.
