The New York Jets are taking the control back. After two years of Aaron Rodgers requesting shots that would be called, things are different under head coach Aaron Glenn. And part of the decision to move on from the veteran quarterback was his outside exposure.
According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the Jets asked Rodgers to stop making Pat McAfee Show weekly appearances.
“I was told that when they had conversations with Aaron Rodgers about what the future would look like, if you’re going to be part of this team you’re going to attend all of training camp. You’re not going to do Pat McAfee interviews anymore.
They had a conversation with him of, ‘If you were to stay here, here is how we would want it to be.’ So this to me is Aaron Glenn getting control back.
I think it’s Aaron Glenn that’s the one pushing for ‘I’m holding everyone accountable and every single person on this team is going to be treated the same way.’
No matter what the Jets were going to say, Aaron Rogers wanted to move on.”
Aaron Rodgers started doing the podcast once a week while he was still with the Green Bay Packers. The Jets allowed him to keep doing it, but the new leadership group wants everyone treated the same way. And this is exactly what a new head coach should do to gain the respect of his roster.
Now, the big question is who the next quarterback will be. Kirk Cousins would be an obvious veteran option, but it’s unclear if the Jets will want a veteran or to take a shot with a younger player, potentially with a higher ceiling.
Technically, Aaron Rodgers is still under contract with the Jets for 2025, and he is slated to make $37.5 million. The Jets have the option to release or trade him, but a trade isn’t a simple move—Rodgers will probably want to have the freedom to choose his next destination and he has a full no-trade clause.
