‘Important’ Arsenal star lined up for January transfer amid Mikel Arteta struggles

Besiktas are interested in signing Arsenal midfielder Jorginho. The 32-year-old, who joined the Gunners from Chelsea for £12million in January 2023, has been linked with a move away from North London in January as he approaches the final six months of his contract.

The Turkish side, who first showed interest over signing Jorginho last winter, are aware that he can leave the Gunners on a free transfer next summer. The Italian started just his third Premier League game of the season against Nottingham Forest on Saturday but was hauled off at half-time.

That, alongside his dipping form, has prompted speculation that Arsenal might not offer Jorginho a new deal and his future would therefore lie elsewhere. And according to The Express, Besiktas want to sign the experienced midfielder and believe that he could be a great fit in Istanbul.

Besiktas are preparing to lose midfielder Moatasem Al-Musrati, who is attracting interest from the Middle East and Jorginho is the man they want. Despite his lack of game time, the Express reports the former Napoli star remains an ‘important’ figure in the Arsenal dressing room and the club hope he can stay until at least the end of the season.

Thomas Partey is another Arsenal player out of contract next summer but Arteta indicated last month that he is keen to keep the Ghana international at the Emirates Stadium. He said: “He’s only 31 and he’s in a really good place… we will have talks. The one thing that we needed was Thomas to be at the level we wanted certainly. He’s working so hard to do what he’s doing at the moment.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal returned to winning ways with a thumping 3-0 win over Forest, as goals from Bukayo Saka, Partey and Ethan Nwaneri helped the Gunners on their way to victory.

Arteta was delighted with his side’s performance to grab their first Premier League win in five and move to within six points of leaders Liverpool. “Really happy, I sensed great energy the last 48 hours, the way everybody came back,” the Spaniard said in his post-match press conference.

“I sensed a great togetherness and decided to change the situation and go through what has been a different period for us with all the situations that we have come across and the team. Straight away, from the beginning it was dominant, there was an enthusiasm about it. This is what I demand when we score a goal, it should have been another two or three in the first half.”
