The Denver Broncos have signed former Indianapolis Colts and University of Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger, adding him as their third option at the position. This move comes after the departure of Zach Wilson, who joined the Miami Dolphins earlier in free agency. Ehlinger will now serve as the third quarterback behind second-year starter Bo Nix and veteran backup Jarrett Stidham.
Ehlinger brings NFL experience to Denver, having appeared in eight games and started three during his time with the Colts. Originally selected by Indianapolis in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, he has completed 64 of 101 pass attempts for 573 yards, throwing three touchdowns and three interceptions in his career.
During his college years at the University of Texas, Ehlinger was a standout player. He finished his Longhorns career with 11,436 passing yards, 94 touchdown passes, and 33 interceptions while also rushing for 1,907 yards and 33 touchdowns. His dual-threat ability made him a dynamic playmaker, though his transition to the NFL has largely seen him in a backup role.
With Denver, Ehlinger joins a quarterback group led by Bo Nix, the team’s presumed starter after being selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Nix is expected to lead the offense in his second year, while Stidham, entering his seventh NFL season, provides veteran stability. Ehlinger, meanwhile, will be tasked with learning the Broncos’ system and providing depth in case of injuries or other unforeseen circumstances.
Denver’s decision to add Ehlinger suggests they value his experience, leadership, and potential fit in Sean Payton’s offense. While he is unlikely to see significant playing time barring injuries to Nix or Stidham, he gives the Broncos a reliable third option who has starting experience at the professional level.
As the Broncos prepare for the upcoming season, Ehlinger’s presence provides additional depth at quarterback, ensuring the team has multiple options at the position. Whether he remains in a reserve role or earns opportunities in preseason play, his experience in different offensive systems should help him adapt quickly to Denver’s scheme.
