New Orleans Saints legend Drew Brees was in Kenner for the grand opening of Surge Entertainment and the soon to be Pro Football Hall of Famer weighed in on a few things, including Derek Carr’s retirement.
“Obviously a bit surprising, you know just being so early in his career and really for a quarterback you feel like you get into your early thirties and you’re really entering your prime, especially for a guy like Derek Carr who’s started every year he’s been in the league since he was drafted by the Raiders, you know felt like he was kind of just getting to that point where man the next five years could be some of his best years, and yet look injuries take their toll, I haven’t spoken to Derek directly but it seemed like this had a lot to do with where his shoulder was at and maybe feeling like he was going to miss a lot of the season,” Brees said.
The Saints Hall of Fame quarterback did mention reaching out to Carr once he learned about the shoulder injury to give him support.
Brees feels like the opportunity will be there for Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler or Jake Haener to become the next quarterback.
Brees recognizes how Shough fought through some adversity in his seven-year college career, but eventually thrived in Louisville’s offense.
“I think he’s big, strong, tough, stand in there deliver the ball, take shots, had three season-ending injuries in college, honestly a lot of similarities to Taysom Hill, Taysom Hill was one these guys coming out of college who had spent four or five years in college, had some major injuries but man whenever he played, he played really really well.”
Brees is one of many people who can’t wait to see how this quarterback competition will shake out.
“I’m not giving anybody the job right now, I know we went out and drafted Tyler Shough in the second round, but I’m sure Haener and Rattler have something to say about that, competitions bring out the best in everybody, I’m sure Kellen is excited to mold these guys.”
Brees did say he would like to see this team add a veteran quarterback to push the younger guys.
