Arsenal have been dealt another injury blow with confirmation that teenager Ethan Nwaneri will be out for a number of weeks with a muscle injury.
Speaking in advance of Tuesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg with Newcastle, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta confirmed the 17 year old picked up the injury in the first half of Saturday’s draw with Brighton.
Serving as a replacement for injury Arsenal star Bukayo Saka, Nwaneri had scored in the game before he was withdrawn at the break.
“Unfortunately he has picked up an injury and is going to be out for a few weeks. It’s a muscular injury,” Arteta said.
“He said: ‘I am feeling something, I don’t know what is it?’
“Obviously he has earned the right to step up and play for us. And now he has started some big games as well and impacted those games that he has done, in different positions as well.
“I am gutted for him because that is going to stop a little bit. But it is another step in that development phase that he is in. I have been really happy with the way he has been going.”
Arteta hopes Kai Havertz, who has been ill, will be fit to return against Newcastle.
“I hope so, but I don’t want to say yes because last time I said I think he was going to be fit and then he wasn’t fit.”
