A year ago, the Chicago Bears entered the 2024 NFL Draft with the No. 1 overall pick, and they selected the consensus best player in USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams. A couple of weeks ago, looking to fill their head coaching vacancy after firing Matt Eberflus, the Bears went out and hired the top candidate on the market in Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.
Now, as Johnson fills out his own coaching staff, he is hiring undoubtedly one of the best running backs coaches in the game, former Kansas City Chiefs and UCLA Bruins offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.
Before his one year with the Bruins at the college level, Bieniemy served as the OC for the Washington Commanders. Before that, he won a pair of Super Bowls as the OC for Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, working under Andy Reid from 2018-2022.
Though he has bounced around a bit in his career as of late, Bieniemy is considered an elite offensive coach, and he had some buzz as a future head coach back when he was with the Chiefs.
Now that he is back in the NFL, we will see if he can make his way up to the coordinator level once again, and potentially garner some buzz as a head coaching candidate down the line.
In the meantime, working under Johnson, operating an offense with Williams at the helm, and coaching up an RB room that features D’Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson should be a pretty great experience.
