The Los Angeles Dodgers weren’t messing around this past offseason.
Los Angeles wanted to add some firepower to the bullpen and certainly did so by signing 2024 All-Star Tanner Scott. The Dodgers got a good look at him after he was traded from the Miami Marlins to the San Diego Padres last year.
He pitched to a 1.75 ERA in 2024 across 72 total appearances. With the Padres, he had a 2.73 ERA in 28 outings. With the Marlins he had a 1.18 ERA in 44 appearances.
Things haven’t been the same so far in 2025 with the Dodgers. Scott has appeared in 29 games and has a 4.55 ERA to show for it. He does have 10 saves, but things haven’t necessarily worked out since he signed a four-year, $72 million deal.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was asked about the closer role and was non-committal to Scott, or any specific hurler for that matter, as transcribed by Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group.
“Right now, it’s kind of how the game plays out,” Roberts said. “You have to kind of pick matchups, and who’s throwing the baseball well, and who you believe in, who can kind of manage that situation. There’s not one particular closer right now. I think I’ve shown that, using different guys in leverage and finishing games and things like that.”
The Dodgers have plenty of talent and still are 13 games above .500. Los Angeles is going to be just fine, but the club has to figure something out with the closer role and it sounds like Scott isn’t guaranteed to be the answer and that it will be more by committee.
