Buyako Saka left the German media far from impressed with his Arsenal performance against Bayern Munich in a Champions League quarter-final second leg. Joshua Kimmich’s second-half header was the decider at Allianz Arena with Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer rarely troubled.
Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard had chances in the opening 45 minutes but barely anything could be split between the two teams with David Raya also forced to make a number of saves. However, as the second period elapsed, the hosts began to take control with Kimmich allowed to run free into the box and head home Raphael Guerreiro’s lofted cross.
On a night where Arsenal were in need of their big players stepping forward, Saka and Declan Rice were among those unable to stamp their mark on the game. Jamal Musiala was the main reason that Rice and midfield partner Jorginho endured a difficult evening with the former Chelsea ace at his very best on Wednesday.
With that in mind, German newspaper Bild, known for their incredibly harsh 1-6 player rating system, have seen their scores published coming out of the European clash. Only Kimmich was given the top score of one with Harry Kane, who endured a quiet evening, rated as the lowest Bayern star at four.
However, some Arsenal stars were given even harsher scores with Saka, Jorginho, William Saliba and Ben White rated at five. The remaining members of the starting XI, minus Martin Odegaard at three, were all given fours which clearly showcased exactly what the German media thought of Arsenal’s display.
The lacklustre performance follows on from defeat to Aston Villa last weekend which significantly dented their Premier League title hopes. Arteta and his players will undoubtedly want to put the last few days behind them with their season in serious danger of falling apart, however they can respond against Wolves on Saturday.
