McLaren F1 Star’s Grand Prix Celebration Criticised… by His Own Mum!
In an us expected twist to a jubilant weekend, McLaren Formula 1 driver Lando Norris’s maiden Grand Prix win in Miami has sparked criticism—not from rivals, pundits, or fans, but from someone much closer to home: his own mother.
Norris, 25, clinched his first Formula 1 victory at the 2025 Miami Grand Prix, ending years of near-misses and podium finishes without a win. The British driver, long hailed as one of the most talented young stars on the grid, finally broke through with a commanding performance, holding off world champion Max Verstappen in a thrilling race.
The victory was met with wild celebrations in the McLaren paddock. Norris, visibly emotional, jumped into the arms of his pit crew and doused his team with champagne on the podium. He later posted a light-hearted video on social media showing him dancing with the trophy, partying with celebrities, and even playfully spraying more champagne in the team garage.
However, not everyone was thrilled with his antics.
Mum Has Her Say
Speaking during an interview with a UK morning show, Lando’s mother, Cisca Wauman, playfully called out her son for what she described as “a little too much showing off” after the win.
“I’m so proud of Lando—he’s worked so hard for this moment,” she began, smiling. “But I did message him and say, ‘Maybe tone down the champagne spraying and jumping about like a madman!’”
While her remarks were clearly light-hearted, she added: “There’s celebrating, and then there’s acting like you’ve won the World Cup. He still has many races ahead. Let’s stay humble.”
Her comments quickly went viral, with fans flooding social media with amused reactions. “Lando’s mum keeping him grounded—iconic,” one user wrote. Another posted a meme jokingly imagining Norris being sent to his room for excessive celebrating.
Norris Responds
Norris, never one to shy away from social media banter, responded with good humour. In a tweet, he wrote: “Even when you win your first race, Mum keeps you in check. Love you!”
In a follow-up video posted to his Instagram story, Norris jokingly raised a glass of sparkling water and said, “To all the mums out there keeping us humble—cheers!”
It’s not the first time the McLaren driver’s family has made headlines. Known for his close relationship with his parents, Norris has often credited them for their unwavering support throughout his racing journey. His father, Adam Norris, a retired businessman, was present in Miami and reportedly shed tears of joy after the win.
A Long Time Coming
Norris’s victory was not just a personal milestone—it marked McLaren’s first race win since Daniel Ricciardo’s victory at Monza in 2021. Since then, the team has gone through a significant rebuild, with young drivers like Norris at the centre of their resurgence.
Team Principal Andrea Stella praised Norris’s performance, saying, “Lando drove like a champion today. He stayed calm under pressure and showed incredible pace. It’s a well-deserved win and a sign of what’s to come.”
Despite the celebration critique from his mum, Norris has received an outpouring of congratulations from across the motorsport world. Fellow drivers, including Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, sent their best wishes, and fans from all over the globe hailed the win as one of the most emotional moments of the 2025 season.
Eyes on the Prize
With the championship battle heating up, Norris remains focused. When asked about his mum’s remarks in the post-race press conference, he laughed, “She’s right, you know. There’s a lot more racing to do, and I’ll try to keep the champagne showers to a minimum—maybe.”
Whether it’s on the track or at home, one thing is certain: Lando Norris has finally arrived at the top of the podium, and he’s bringing
a bit of British family charm with him.
