Colts Make Waves in the NFL with Key Roster Moves and Trade Rumors
The Indianapolis Colts have been a team in flux over the last few seasons, with their roster undergoing significant changes in an effort to build a competitive squad for the future. As the NFL draft approaches and teams start making critical offseason moves, the Colts are at a crossroads. With a new general manager, Shane Steichen, and fresh leadership across the board, the Colts have made headlines with a series of trades, cuts, and acquisitions to bolster their roster.
One of the biggest stories coming out of Indianapolis in recent years was the release of linebacker Shaquille Leonard, formerly known as Darius Leonard, in November 2023. Leonard had been a cornerstone of the Colts’ defense, a two-time All-Pro, and the heart of their linebacking corps. His departure came as a shock to many fans, as Leonard had been viewed as one of the most talented and dynamic linebackers in the league. However, injuries and a subsequent decline in his level of play led to the decision to move on from the veteran linebacker, making it one of the more controversial decisions of the season.
With Leonard gone, the Colts’ front office quickly turned their attention to replenishing the linebacker position. The team signed veteran safety Ronnie Harrison Jr. in an effort to add depth and versatility to the defense. Harrison’s transition to linebacker brings a fresh perspective to the Colts’ defensive schemes. Though he is primarily known as a safety, his size, experience, and football IQ allow him to contribute in multiple roles, making him an intriguing addition to Indianapolis’ defensive unit.
In the same vein, trade rumors have been swirling around Indianapolis as they look to further improve their defense. One name that keeps coming up in discussions is Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson. Hendrickson, who has been a dominant pass rusher over the last few seasons, is reportedly a top trade target for the Colts. His familiarity with new Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, who previously coached Hendrickson in Cincinnati, could give Indianapolis an inside track in acquiring the talented edge rusher.
The Colts’ defense, which has often been the team’s strongest unit, underwent a shift following the Leonard release, and the addition of Hendrickson could help solidify a pass rush that has been inconsistent at times. Indianapolis’ defense finished 2024 ranked in the middle of the pack in terms of sacks and pressures, which is not where they want to be if they hope to compete in a division that includes high-powered offenses like the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Colts have been rebuilding around their quarterback situation. After the departure of longtime starter Andrew Luck, the team has struggled to find a consistent leader under center. The Colts invested in rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson in the 2024 draft, hoping that his mobility and arm strength can bring stability to the position. However, his development will be key, and the Colts will likely lean on their defense to keep them in games during his growth period.
As the 2025 season approaches, the Colts are looking to make significant strides both on offense and defense. With important acquisitions like Harrison and the possibility of adding Hendrickson, the Colts are positioning themselves for a potential playoff push. However, much of their success will depend on how their younger players develop and how effectively new coordinator Lou Anarumo implements his defensive schemes.
