Former Barcelona star and Brazilian legend Rivaldo has shared his thoughts on how Xabi Alonso is managing Vinicius at Real Madrid.
It is to be noted that Alonso decided to bench Vinicius on the bench for the Real Ovideo clash.
Many were surprised to see the winger start on the bench, but Rivaldo believes the approach is smart and beneficial for the player.
“I don’t see it as a punishment. He was a substitute to bring out the best in Vinicius. It’s a strategy to help Vinicius grow even more. And it’s paying off. He’s started scoring goals,” Rivaldo explained.
According to him, Alonso is using this method intentionally to help Vinicius develop, rather than as a form of criticism.
The strategy appears to be working as the young winger continues to make a strong impact when he comes off the bench.
Alonso’s insight and Rodrygo’s role
Rivaldo also emphasised Alonso’s understanding of his players. “Xabi is a great coach, but he was also a great player.
“He knows exactly what a player like Vinicius is thinking. He knows that sometimes you have to make adjustments with the greats,” he said.
Rivaldo added, “Xabi, like any coach, always wants the best from his players. He knows that Vinicius is important and understands how to get the best performance from him.”
Turning to Rodrygo, Rivaldo highlighted the importance of keeping him in the squad. “It’s a good decision because he’s an important player.
“He can decide games and will have opportunities to play. Xabi counts on him,” Rivaldo said.
He also added, “the coach always needs the best at his side. It’s better to have them than not to have them. Xabi will find a way to get the best out of Rodrygo to have a great season,” he concluded.
