Arsenal‘s ambition to strengthen their midfield this summer faces a clear financial hurdle. Reports from Spain indicate that Real Sociedad have set a non-negotiable €60 million price tag for their star midfielder, Martin Zubimendi.
Zubimendi: a priority target
Zubimendi has emerged as a top target for Mikel Arteta. The Arsenal manager is reportedly keen to add the defensively astute Spaniard to his squad, allowing him to deploy Declan Rice in a more attacking role. Arteta, having spent time at Real Sociedad himself, understands the Basque club’s tradition of developing exceptional young talent.
Real Sociedad’s stance
Estadio Deportivo reports that Real Sociedad have made their position crystal clear: “there is no negotiation.” Zubimendi’s €60 million release clause is the only way to secure his signature. This uncompromising stance reflects the player’s importance to the La Liga side as well as an awareness of the money available from Premier League clubs.
Zubimendi’s availability could sideline Arsenal’s long-standing interest in Aston Villa‘s Douglas Luiz. While Luiz remains a valuable option, sources suggest the Gunners believe he’s likely to stay at Villa Park if they achieve Champions League qualification.
Arsenal’s options
Arsenal ultimately have a simple, if expensive, path to securing Zubimendi. Triggering his release clause would remove any obstacles from Real Sociedad’s side and allow the Gunners to negotiate directly with the player. Whether the club is willing to commit such a significant sum remains to be seen, especially considering the potential need to strengthen in other positions.
