Arsenal news: Martin Odegaard injury update as Mikel Arteta ‘disappointment’ highlighted
However, Arsenal will be without several key players when they take on Eddie Howe’s side at St James’ Park. With that in mind, Mirror Football has taken a look at all of the latest news from the Emirates.
Odegaard injury update
Arteta has revealed that captain Martin Odegaard will not be available for their trip to Newcastle as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury.
Defender Ricciardo Calafiori will also miss the game, while the availability of Ben White and Gabriel Magalhaes is in doubt. “Riccardo and Martin are out definitely,” Arteta confirmed in his pre-match press conference.
“With Ben, we don’t know yet. He hasn’t trained yet. He could not train, he could not get involved, so let’s wait and see if he’s available. We have a training session today. If [Gabriel] can complete that, he’ll be available.”
Arsenal “disappointment”
Liverpool legend John Barnes was left “disappointed” with Arsenal’s decision to sit back against the Reds, claiming it ultimately cost them the win.
“It was an excellent game,” Barnes told the Sign Up – Into Football programme on TNT Sports. “Arsenal were probably the better team in the first half, especially when they went 2-1 up. At that point, I didn’t think Liverpool would come back.
“But Arsenal sat back and allowed Liverpool to attack, which led to the equaliser. I’m pleased Liverpool showed resilience, but I was disappointed Arsenal didn’t keep pushing forward.”
