Arsenal will soon complete a permanent transfer for Brentford goalkeeper David Raya who has spent the last season on loan at the Emirates and won the Golden Glove for 15 clean sheets in 30 Premier League matches. The Spaniard was brought in to the mix last summer with Mikel Arteta supposedly seeking two ‘number one’ goalkeepers. However, the Gunners’ former number one Aaron Ramsdale was reduced to just six Premier League appearances in 2023/24 and is now reportedly looking for a transfer elsewhere this summer.
As the Gunners now hunt for a secondary glovesman, a shock link has been made with Juventus keeper – and former Arsenal star – Wojciech Szczesny. According to reports from Tutto Juve, Szczesny has been added to Arsenal’s target list for the upcoming transfer window, six years after departing the Emirates club.
The Poland international spent 11 years at N7 before leaving for Serie A in 2017. Between 2009 and 2017, the 34-year-old made 132 league appearances for the Gunners, spending time on loan at Brentford in his first season and Roma in his last two, before heading to Juventus. He now has one year left on his contract with the Old Lady, having made 252 appearances for the club, winning three Serie A titles and three Coppa Italia trophies in the process, and reportedly the Gunners are in the picture to snap him up this summer.
It’s claimed Juventus are hoping to earn €5m (£4.2m) from Szczesny’s sale, an affordable figure for the Gunners. The 34-year-old also has interest from Al-Nassr and a move there would allow him to significantly improve his wages. According to talkSPORT, a move to Cristiano Ronaldo’s side seems far more imminent than a move back to north London, with the media outlet reporting that the Polish star could £250,000-a-week.
While Szczesny has a big decision to make over his club future, his immediate priority will be on the upcoming European Championships as he seeks to add to his 82 Poland international caps.
