Andy Townsend says ‘everyone was saying’ Arsenal would sign ‘remarkable’ player

Mikel Arteta has decided to further enhance his defence, with Arsenal conceding the least amount of goals last season (29).

Video captured Riccardo Calafiori’s first words as an Arsenal player, with the Italy international being able t0 play at left-back and centre-back.

Going back to last summer, there has always been talk that Arteta needs to bring in a number nine if he wants that little bit of extra in the Premier League title race.

On paper, they don’t have that bonafide striker, with Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz leading the line – the latter, in particular, ended the previous season very well.

But one name keeps cropping up, with Andy Townsend even thinking that this deal was going to be done and it was the ‘obvious destination’.

You sense, if that was the case, then Arsenal wouldn’t be heading into August without that striker because they are far more efficient in the transfer market, in that regard.

Ivan Toney has had some really great battles with the Gunners over the years and Townsend feels that he seemed like the ‘perfect fit’ for the club, as he told talkSPORT (28/07/24 at 3:15 pm).

But fast forward to the present and talk of a transfer to Arsenal has completely died down and the ice-cool striker himself is still a Brentford player, with 12 months left on his deal.

Ivan Toney was destined for Arsenal transfer

“What about all the Ivan Toney talk,” said Townsend.

“Just a couple of months ago, it was the obvious destination and everyone was saying ‘it was a matter of time’. Perhaps he is the sort of perfect fit, in terms of that focal point and nine that can deliver some goals as well. Do you think that one has gone away?”

Will Ivan Toney get his big move?

The 28-year-old missed large chunks of the previous campaign because he was serving a ban for betting breaches, it meant that he lost all form and rhythm when he returned to the pitch.

All in all, it seems to have cost Toney because teams aren’t queuing up left, right and centre to take him – Tottenham have been told they would close the gap on Manchester City if they signed Toney.
