‘Agreement in place’ – Newcastle United’s ‘one that got away’ nears cut-price Premier League return

Former Newcastle United midfielder Mikel Merino is closing in on a sensational move to Arsenal, according to reports.

Fresh after winning Euro 2024 with Spain, the 28-year-old is set to join the Gunners for a cut-price fee. Merino has developed into one of Europe’s top midfielders since leaving Newcastle six years ago.

Rafa Benitez brought his compatriot to Tyneside in 2017, initially on loan before triggering a release clause. Toon fans witnessed a future gem, with Merino’s silky displays in the engine room dazzling supporters.

However, a back injury disrupted his campaign and, when he returned, Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden had reignited their Championship-winning partnership in midfield. Merino was a bit-part player from January onwards as Newcastle coasted to 10th place.

He left for Real Sociedad the following summer and developed into a regular Champions League performer. Spain called him up to the Euros where he bagged a dramatic last-gasp winner to knock hosts Germany out in the quarter-finals.

Arsenal are now set to make Merino their second major signing of the summer for a reported £21million fee. Just a year ago, Manchester City were quoted at around £60million for the Basque star.

Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano claims the Gunners have reached a “verbal agreement” for the former Newcastle man. He posted on social media: “Arsenal are closing in on Mikel Merino deal as verbal agreement is now getting closer!

“Agreement in place on personal terms as Merino wants the move. Verbal discussions with Real Sociedad for a package in excess of €30m, talks on to get the deal done.”
