Aaron Rodgers made career intentions clear before being cut by New York Jets

Aaron Rodgers made it clear to the New York Jets that he’s not ready to retire just yet. On Feb. 13, the Jets announced they were parting ways with the former Super Bowl champion, ending a two-year stint that didn’t quite go as planned.

In 2023, Rodgers only managed four snaps for New York before an Achilles injury put him out of action for the rest of the year. Despite staying fit in 2024 and playing all 17 games, it seemed time had caught up with the four-time MVP, leading the Jets to a disappointing 5-12 record.

With the Jets now on the hunt for a new quarterback, Rodgers has reportedly made it clear he still wants to play. According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, Rodgers expressed his desire to stay in the game during several meetings with Jets’ personnel.

Breer added that Rodgers understood the Jets might want to change direction. The decision to part ways with Rodgers was seen as being in the best interest of the organization.

However, the Jets believe the former champ can still perform at a high level, just not with them. With Rodgers’ time in New York seemingly over, rumors are already circulating that he could sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Bookmakers are predicting the four-time MVP will join Mike Tomlin’s team once the dust settles on his Jets departure.

Aaron Rodgers’ potential next team

The veteran quarterback has been linked to a host of teams including the Steelers, Las Vegas Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, Tennessee Titans, New York Giants, Minnesota Vikings, and Los Angeles Rams. While his next move is still up in the air, Rodgers dropped a subtle hint about his preferences when quizzed by a TMZ reporter about heading to the West Coast next season.

“I’m just enjoying the sunshine right now,” he said, before outlining what he’s looking for in his next team: “If they want you … if they got a good team.”

Considering all factors, Pittsburgh could be the best fit. With Russell Wilson and Justin Fields as free agents, the Steelers are on the lookout for an experienced quarterback to lead them to success.

They’ve also just come off a Wild Card appearance, losing out to Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens. Other interested teams might not be as suitable for Rodgers, with some having established starters or not being ready to compete immediately.
