And just like that. The Eagles made it to the final game of the 2024 NFL season.
It’s been a wild ride for Eagles fans. Coming off the great collapse that saw the Birds lose 6 of 7 games to end last season. And incredulous overreactions to starting the season 2-2. Including myself, as I was calling for Nick Sirianni’s job on the Way Outside The Nest Podcast during the Bye Week and even after beating the Bengals 37-17.
Fast forward to now, following a 10 game win streak. Being able to successfully clinch the division, and the second seed. Meant that the Eagles would host all three playoff games on their way to the Super Bowl. And now they’re getting a 3rd chance in 8 seasons to play in the Super Bowl.
A Rematch Against The Chiefs
Super Bowl LIX will be the 4th time the Sirianni/Hurts led Eagles meet against the Reid/Mahomes led Chiefs.
Here’s how those previous matches have ended
2021 Week 4: Chiefs 42 – Eagles 30
Super Bowl LVII: Chiefs 38 – Eagles 35
2023 Week 11: Eagles 21 – Chiefs 17
The first matchup was the Eagles first year under their new QB1 & Head Coach duo. Coming off a 4-11-1 year it’s no surprise that offense and defense couldn’t keep up with a Chiefs team just beginning their dynasty.
2022 was the start of the Eagles window. Free of the Carson Wentz dead cap and making blockbuster deals with the Saints & Titans. The Eagles surprised many when they emerged atop the NFC and punched their ticket to Arizona for Super Bowl LVII.
While they ultimately fell short, there was always
hope for next year.
Beating the Chiefs feels impossible sometimes. Whether it’s the playoffs or the regular season. It may have been an ugly win last season. But the Eagles proved that they could beat the Chiefs. Even if they collapsed just weeks later during the Gauntlet of playoff teams on the schedule.
And now. At the very end of the season. They’ll have to prove they can do it again.
More Hiring Cycle Concerns
When your Coordinators lead some of the best units in the NFL. It’s no wonder they get hired in the next coaching cycle.
It was finally time for Aaron Glenn(Jets) and Ben Johnson(Bears) to depart Detroit after multiple years.
The Eagles lost both Jonathan Gannon(Cardinals) and Shane Steichen(Colts) after two seasons in Philadelphia.
And now, they’re likely going to need another Offensive Coordinator next season too.
With Kellen Moore having considered for the Dallas Cowboys head coaching availability before they eventually hired Brian Schottenheimer. Moore is now being considered for the Saints open position. Which yes, seems like the much, much worse scenario to be joining.
With their 3rd Offensive Coordinator set to leave in as many years. The Eagles need just one more incredible gameplan from Moore.
We’re just over a week away from the Eagles shot at their 2nd Super Bowl title. Where will you be watching next weekends game?
Go Birds!
