How Intriguing Report About No. 1 Pick Could Affect Patriots

The New England Patriots are stuck at No. 4 and have to wait things out at the top of the 2025 NFL Draft. That’s why any rumor about the top three picks provides intrigue for them.

Normally, teams would be delighted with the first overall pick in a draft. However, this year’s class doesn’t inspire confidence. Abdul Carter and Travis Hunter are generational players, but are they worth taking at No. 1?

It’s why the Titans are keeping their options open. According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, Tennessee needs more time before deciding if it wants to stay at No. 1. Quarterback prospects Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders didn’t throw at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine, so talent evaluators will have to wait for their pro days. The NFL insider added that there was “real interest” from “several teams” to move up to the top spot.

That would be good news for the Patriots. If at least one quarterback gets selected with the top three picks, that increases their chances of drafting Carter or Hunter. Two signal-callers getting drafted in the top three would be the dream scenario.

So, in a way, New England should hope that teams are impressed enough with Ward or Sanders, the projected top-two QBs in the class, to trade up. Of course, the Patriots also would benefit as trading down would benefit them, especially if Carter and Hunter are off the board.
