Los Angeles Chargers Named Top Trade Fit for $71 Million Former All-Pro

Last offseason saw the Los Angeles Chargers part with their top two receivers in an effort to cut costs. While the moves felt extremely risky at the time, the Chargers emerged as a playoff team without getting any help from Keenan Allen and Mike Williams.

While Ladd McConkey emerged as a potential future star, the Chargers aren’t done overhauling their receiving corps. Now, it could be time to add a proven star.

Justin Herbert still managed to get the Los Angeles Chargers a 1,000-yard receiver thanks to developing a strong connection with rookie wideout Ladd McConkey. The next top producer was former first-round pick Quentin Johnston, who will still be just 24 years old next season.

However, the Chargers still need to surround their growing quarterback with more weapons.

One potential solution could be to turn to the San Francisco 49ers, who are shopping former All-Pro receiver Deebo Samuel.

Recently, 49ers insider Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports had the Chargers listed as one of five teams mentioned as the “top trade fits” for Samuel this offseason.

“The 49ers might be reluctant to send Samuel to Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers. But if that’s the best deal available, that’s the move that should be made. The Chargers will look to add to their group of wide receivers this offseason. Rookie Ladd McConkey was a fine selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, as he caught 82 passes for 1,149 yards and seven touchdowns. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman is a master at designing the run game, and there is an opportunity to get some production from Samuel in that area, too.”

Signed to a three-year, $71 million contract in 2022, the 49ers need to cut costs this offseason, and Samuel has been deemed too expensive to keep, thanks to his $15.8 million cap hit in 2025. In the final year of his contract, Samuel is likely seeking an extension, and those discussions could take place in Los Angeles.

The Chargers don’t need Samuel to be their No. 1 receiver. They just need Samuel to fit in behind a developing McConkey while getting all they can from Johnston. As a result, Los Angeles could be a prime destination for a Samuel trade.
