Mail issues continue out of new Indianapolis hub

INDIANAPOLIS — In the last several weeks, viewers have been reaching out to FOX59/CBS4 about problems with mail issues in the Indianapolis area.

According to Locke’s Mail Service, the new U.S. Postal Service hub is the main source of the problems. Andrew Locke said about two months ago, he was notified by USPS that they were closing the mail processing annex near the airport and consolidating to a new space on the east side.

“I was putting in 100 hours plus a week without even blinking an eye during the month of December,” he said.

Locke said this was due to skeleton crews working at both hubs during the busiest time of year. Truckers were waiting as long as six hours just to get their load.

“We’ve had drivers quit because of this, because they’re working too many hours,” said Locke.

Even though the old facility has since closed, he said they still are seeing problems.

“This glut of packages, it just keeps growing,” said Locke. The trucks don’t stop coming in so the packages just keep growing, and they get lost amongst this one huge, quarter-mile-long building.”

Inside the distribution hub, boxes on boxes of mail sit.

Outside, lines of trucks wrap around the building daily because the new system is moving so slowly.

“It’s really backwards from what we’re used to normally,” said Locke. “We just deal with the post office, but not a contractor who is operating the parking area for the post office.”

According to Locke, another contractor tells them which bay to go to and what they need to deliver.

He said that’s where a lot of the mix-ups are happening.

“They will see a container that says Cincinnati. They’ll put it on the truck from Cincinnati. Probably a good chance that that came from Cincinnati, and now it’s going back to Cincinnati,” said Locke.

Dozens of viewers have reached out to FOX59/CBS4 showing their package tracking routes not adding up or mail sitting still for weeks.

“It’s just been the most amazingly frustrating thing I’ve ever experienced,” said John Avery.

One man in Colorado had a state-issued ID mailed out nearly a month ago and it has still not arrived at its destination.

“I’ve called the United States Postal Service, talked to their national number,” said Avery. “They can’t really give me any answers.”

FOX59/CBS4 reached out to USPS about these complaints and has received no response as of this article’s publication.
