Chiefs safety Justin Reid loves that Super Bowl LIX will be played in New Orleans, about an hour from where he grew up in Prairieville, Louisiana. But it could get expensive. Reid said he’s on the hook for Super Bowl tickets, as many as 30 for family and friends. “We’re excited to play and we’re chasing glory,” Reid said. “But we’ve got to win just for me to break even.” Reid was joking, but perhaps not by much. Players receive an allotment of two tickets and have the ability to purchase more.
Two years ago, for Super Bowl LVII, players could buy 13 additional tickets at face value, a price that wasn’t announced. After that, players can look to purchase tickets from other players or — like most of the fans who will attend the Sunday, Feb. 9 game between the Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles — they can hit the secondary market. Reid, who earns about $10 million annually from the Chiefs, can afford the hit. He and other players also receive a bonus for playing in the Super Bowl — players on the winning team get more, players on the losing team receive less. Last year, Chiefs players earned $164,000 each for KC’s victory over the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers players pocketed $89,000 each. Those figures increase each year.
Ticket prices for this year’s Super Bowl are running behind the pace of last year’s game in Las Vegas, but Reid hasn’t seemed to notice. “Tickets … prices are running up, man,’’ he said.
