Newcastle United have beaten Arsenal to the signing of striker who is just like Roberto Firmino

The Magpies announced last month they have reached an agreement with Dinamo Tbilisi to sign the Georgian wonderkid on his 18th birthday in August 2025.

As reported by NewcastleWorld, Newcastle have saw off competition from several European clubs, including Premier League rivals Arsenal.

Speaking about winning the race for Salia, sporting director Paul Mitchell said: “We’re delighted to get ahead of a number of other top clubs to sign Vakhtang.

“Scouting and recruiting emerging talent is an essential part of building a sustainable future, particularly within the current PSR framework, so the market is fiercely competitive.

“We continue to scout extensively, both domestically and overseas, with a view to securing players who can come through our talent pathway and, ideally, become part of the first team in future.

“We look forward to working with Vakhtang and wish him every success during his remaining time with Dinamo Tbilisi.”

Salia is regarded as one of Georgia’s most exciting young prospects having drawn comparisons with Napoli star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia due to his nationality and the fact they both came through the youth system at Dinamo.

However, the 17-year-old is more like former Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino, who won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup during his eight years at Anfield.

That’s according to Mikha Gabechava, who crossed paths with Salia during his time at Dinamo Tbilisi working in the scout and data department. Gabechava is now a scout at Belgian side KAA Gent.

“I can see why people compare himself to [Khvicha] Kvaratskhelia, although I would probably say the player that he resembles even more is Roberto Firmino because of his style of play,” he told Loaded Mag NUFC.

“I think both of them are a mix of a poacher and a false nine, plus both of them have a very high work rate.

“If I compare Salia to Kvaratskhelia, I don’t think Kvaratskhelia can play false nine and I don’t think he can be as efficient in that role as a lone striker in 4-3-3.
