Ange Postecoglou rubs salt in Arsenal’s wounds as Tottenham boss sets new target

Ange Postecoglou does not think a humongous points total will be required to win the Premier League this season but the Tottenham boss claims neighbours Arsenal already have no room for manoeuvre.

While Spurs are nine points behind Liverpool in seventh place before facing Ipswich on Sunday afternoon, the Gunners travel to Chelsea badly needing a win to preserve their hopes of a title challenge.

Mikel Arteta ’s team have struggled to score goals and one point from their past three games leaves them seven points behind Liverpool. The league leaders face Aston Villa on Saturday night and could be 10 clear by the time both Spurs and Arsenal are in action.

Arteta has previously said almost 100 points would be needed to overhaul reigning champions Manchester City.

Yet 10 games into the season, and with Pep Guardiola ’s side struggling with key man Rodri out for the season with injury, Postecoglou said less than a century should be sufficient come May.

But he has warned Arsenal they still must be perfect for the remainder of the campaign because of their recent dip in results.

“If you look at the current trajectory, yeah potentially [less than 100 points],” he said. “I’m not sure about points targets but if you look at the losses already that some of the top clubs have had and you’re talking about those targets.

Arsenal go into their match against Chelsea off the back of a defeat in Italy and one point from nine in the league.

“Obviously Liverpool are still on course to potentially achieve that but Arsenal pretty much have to be perfect between now and the end of the year to reach those targets.

“The competition in the Premier League and the demands that all the clubs have with European football, international football, the injuries, it’s unlikely.

“Liverpool are still in that kind of position so it may take that [number] but if you look at the beginning of the Premier League, it will be hard for some other clubs to reach that level unless they’re perfect. With Man City, that could very well happen.”
