Former Arsenal academy striker Chido Martin Obi has finally officially signed for Manchester United.
After a long wait, former Arsenal academy striker Chido Martin Obi finally confirmed his move to Manchester United with a post on Instagram on Saturday.
“Very happy to sign with this amazing club, time to focus and achieve all my dreams,” the player said. “Thanks to everyone who has helped me get this far.”
Martin Obi decided to join Manchester United over the summer, rejecting a contract offer from the Gunners, but his situation has been up in the air for the last couple of months.
After Martin Obi agreed to the move in late July and held his medical in early August, he then had to wait for the two clubs to come to terms.
Unlike with senior players, clubs are due compensation for academy players even if the player reaches the end of their contract. Martin Obi’s deal with Arsenal was up, but United still have to pay for his transfer.
In order to avoid a tribunal, Arsenal and United negotiated a fair compensation payment, and they’ve now evidently reached a resolution.
16-year-old Martin Obi was the Arsenal u18s’ top scorer in 2023/24, with 32 goals. He also made five appearances for the u19s and u21s, though he didn’t find the net in those cameos.
