Arsenal’s incredible 03/04 team appeared to go by another name before being widely known as ‘The Invincibles’.
Back in the 03/04 campaign, one of English football’s best-ever teams produced a flawless season to clinch the Premier League title without losing a single match.
Led by Arsene Wenger, the squad that consisted of players such as Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Robert Pires, Ashley Cole, Sol Campbell, Patrick Vieira and Jens Lehmann won the title with a record of 28 wins and 12 draws from 38 league matches.
In total, the Gunners collected 90 points and finished 11 ahead of second-placed Chelsea. They also managed to score 73 goals and conceded just 26.
Over the years, the Arsenal team from the 03/04 season has been known as ‘The Invincibles’. However, a Reddit user has unearthed that the team actually went by another name – ‘The Untouchables’.
The user posted a picture of a selection of Arsenal DVDs and wrote: “Just unearthed some old DVD’s. Interestingly.. (and I’d totally forgotten this), in the wake of the 03/04 season, looks like the team was referred to as “The Untouchables”, as opposed to The Invincibles.”
Since Arsenal in 03/04, no team has managed to go through a Premier League season without tasting defeat.
Chelsea managed one defeat during the 04/05 season before Liverpool came close in the 19/20 campaign after losing just once.
Speaking about the challenge of not losing for 38 matches, Wenger told The Mirror in May this year: “I wanted to challenge the team and challenge myself as well.
“I was always obsessed by improvement and these players had the football quality and the mental resources to respond.”
Arsenal have not got their hands on the Premier League title since winning in the 03/04 season.
Mikel Arteta is the latest man trying to bring the glory days back to the Emirates Stadium.
Under the Spaniard’s guidance, the Gunners pushed Manchester City all the way last season but ultimately fell short.
