Viktor Gyokeres sends Arsenal £85m transfer reminder as Sporting CP exit hint dropped

Viktor Gyokeres continues to send Arsenal reminders of why the club should complete a move for him this summer.

Signing a forward is on the agenda for Arsenal. They have already attempted to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig earlier in the summer, but the Slovenian ultimately opted to remain with the Bundesliga outfit.

Beyond him, Arsenal are admirers of Gyokeres, who has garnered attention from some of the world’s biggest clubs. And he continued to do so after bagging two goals in Sporting Clube de Portugal’s 6-1 league win over Nacional on Saturday night.

He played the full 90 minutes, scored twice and was unfortunate to not score a third after his effort hit the bar in the latter stages. Following the win in Madeira, Gyokeres took to Instagram to post a picture of himself and wrote: “Let’s go,” followed by the Lion emoji, the animal the team takes its nickname from.

Prior to the start of the season, Gyokeres missed Sporting’s first two pre-season friendlies against Union Saint-Gilloise and Sevilla after undergoing a knee surgery earlier in the summer. Also starting in the Lions’ 3-1 win over Rio Ave in the opening game of the season, the Swede netted his first goal.

Previously asked about his future, the striker suggested he likes playing under Ruben Amorim. “Ruben Amorim is a great coach; I wouldn’t mind if he stayed (laughs),” Gyokeres said in early May. “I’ve had many coaches, but of course, Ruben Amorim brought me here; he was very important in my caree”Thank you, Sporting fans, see you soon. It’s football; I can’t promise anything; I have a contract, and I won’t be sad if I leave – I’m very happy but we’ll see what happens. We can’t predict much, but we’ll see what next year will be like.”

Amorim meanwhile, was also quizzed about Gyokeres’ situation as he continues to attract interest from several clubs. He explained: “In terms of the transfer market, we can’t control it. The players who had a lot of impact last season, if they were to leave, it would mean good money coming in.

“I’m not worried at all. We’re competing in the Champions League this year and we want to be champions again. We’re very focussed but anything can happen until the end of the window.” Gyokeres has a release clause which is valued at £85million (€100m).
