Williams was a shining star in Euro 2024, helping Spain clinch the trophy and make history as the first team to win the tournament with a clean sweep of victories.

The Athletic Bilbao forward’s performance was nothing short of spectacular, scoring two goals and assisting one, including in the final against England. Alongside Lamine Yamal, he became one of the most talked-about players during and after the competition.

Speculation about Williams’ future has been rife, with Arsenal and Liverpool among several Premier League clubs showing interest. The Gunners are reportedly on the hunt for a new forward this summer, and Williams seemed to fit the bill for Mikel Arteta’s plans.

However, Barcelona appeared to be leading the race to sign the 22 year old, although the financial aspects of the deal posed a challenge for the Catalan club. Liverpool has also been linked but is not thought to have made a formal approach.

As per reports from Sport in Spain, Williams had made a promise to his brother Inaki to play another season at Bilbao, and it appears he’s sticking to his word. It is reported that Williams has decided to stay put at Athletic Bilbao for the 2024/25 season.

This news comes as a setback to all the clubs interested in signing him this year. However, if the promise of one more season is to be believed, there will undoubtedly be further speculation surrounding Williams’ future next summer.

Arsenal may revisit their interest in the forward in the summer of 2025. By then, Williams will be 23 and will have gained another year of experience in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

His contract with Bilbao runs until 2027, and a move next year could represent the last opportunity for the Spanish club to command a significant transfer fee for him.
