Arsenal Women are reportedly interested in signing Lioness and Barcelona star Keira Walsh from Barcelona, according to Charlotte Harpur of the Athletic in the NY Times.
The 27-year-old is attracting interest from the Women’s Super League side after two years with the Spanish giants. Walsh is set to enter the final year of her contract with Barcelona reportedly keen to keep hold of their star. The Catalan side would demand a large fee to secure her services ahead of the new season, just two years after the player moved for a then-world record fee of £400,000.
Walsh was a key part of the quadruple winning side this season just a year after winning the treble the season before in a dominant period for the Spanish side.
A good move for Arsenal?
After the signing of Alessia Russo last year from rivals Manchester United, Arsenal could be set to add another high profile Lioness star to the ranks. Walsh has been playing in a deeper midfield role for Barcelona and could offer Arsenal a more composed and controlled middle of the park. The injury to Victoria Pelova could seriously impact on Arsenal’s hopes of challenging in the WSL next season without replacement. Kim Little and Kyra Cooney-Cross can occupy the position, however a superstar talent such as Walsh would add much more.
The player also has a good profile in the women’s game, and a link up of two of England’s biggest stars in Walsh and Russo could provide Arsenal with valuable opportunities going forward especially after the loss of the WSL all-time leading goalscorer Vivianne Miedema, who departed the club at the end of the season following the conclusion of her contract. Walsh was named as player of the game in the final of Euro 2022 as they picked up the trophy from Germany.
