Breaking: Viktor Gyökeres in London with Martin Ødegaard Ahead of Arsenal Transfer

Arsenal’s long pursuit of Viktor Gyökeres appears to be reaching its climax, as the Swedish striker has reportedly arrived in London, accompanied by Gunners captain Martin Ødegaard. This development marks a significant shift in the transfer saga, indicating that a move to North London is now imminent.

Gyökeres, currently under contract with Sporting CP, has emerged as one of Europe’s most prolific forwards. His 2024–25 season with Sporting was outstanding, scoring 29 goals in all competitions and registering double digits in assists. This has made him one of the most sought-after strikers in the market, and Arsenal—desperate for a clinical No. 9—are eager to bring him to the Emirates.

The 26-year-old striker is believed to have already agreed on personal terms with Arsenal, reportedly even forgoing around £1.7 million in wages to help facilitate the transfer. Sporting, however, continue to play hardball. They are demanding a fee of around €65–70 million plus add-ons. Arsenal’s most recent offer is said to be €56 million upfront, with bonuses that could bring the total package close to Sporting’s valuation.

What has added fuel to the fire is Gyökeres’ decision to skip Sporting’s preseason training. Club president Frederico Varandas has expressed frustration over the player’s absence, with reports suggesting the club may consider disciplinary action. It’s a clear sign that the striker is determined to force the move, even at the cost of souring relations with his current employer.

Martin Ødegaard’s presence alongside Gyökeres in London is particularly interesting. The two share a close friendship from their time together with the Swedish and Norwegian national setups and have bonded off the pitch as well. Ødegaard, known for his playmaking abilities, would benefit immensely from the arrival of a striker like Gyökeres, whose movement, power, and clinical finishing would be a perfect match for Arsenal’s attacking style.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has made it clear he wants to add a top-quality striker to his squad this summer. The club came agonizingly close to winning the Premier League title last season, and many analysts believe that a proven goal-scorer like Gyökeres could be the missing piece.

If the deal goes through, Gyökeres would become one of the most expensive signings in Arsenal’s history—potentially surpassing the €72 million spent on Nicolas Pépé in 2019. But unlike Pépé, Gyökeres arrives with form, fitness, and a proven record in a competitive league.

As of now, talks between Arsenal and Sporting are ongoing, with a growing sense of optimism on both sides. With Gyökeres already in London and personal terms agreed, it seems only a matter of time before the final paperwork is completed.

Arsenal fans can begin to get excited. The arrival of Viktor Gyökeres would not only bolster their attack but also send a strong message that the club is ready to seriously contend for silverware in the 2025–26 season.
