‘My home forever’ – Luka Modric says heartfelt farewell to Real Madrid after playing last game for Los Blancos at Club World Cup

Luka Modrić Bids Emotional Farewell to Real Madrid After 13 Glorious Years

After more than a decade of unparalleled success, Croatian midfielder Luka Modrić has officially bid farewell to Real Madrid, ending one of the most illustrious careers in the club’s history. His final appearance came during Real Madrid’s 4–0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup semi-final on July 9, 2025, marking the conclusion of his 13-year tenure with Los Blancos.

Modrić joined Real Madrid in 2012 from Tottenham Hotspur and went on to become one of the club’s most iconic figures. Over the years, he played 597 games, scored 39 goals, and provided more than 70 assists. More importantly, he helped lead the team to 28 major titles, including five UEFA Champions League trophies, four La Liga titles, and multiple FIFA Club World Cups, cementing his place as the most decorated player in the club’s history.

In an emotional farewell message, Modrić referred to Real Madrid as “my home forever,” expressing deep gratitude for the club, his teammates, and the fans. “Playing for Real Madrid changed my life,” he said. “This club has given me everything. I leave with a full heart, filled with pride, gratitude, and unforgettable memories.” The farewell ceremony was attended by Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, who was visibly emotional, underscoring the strong bond between the two.

Modrić was lauded not only for his skill on the pitch but also for his leadership, humility, and work ethic. Manager Xabi Alonso paid tribute to the 39-year-old, saying that Modrić “will be remembered not just for the trophies, but for the way he carried himself every day—with dignity, discipline, and passion.” Alonso added that Modrić’s final performance does not define him: “What he built over 13 years is what matters most.”

One of Modrić’s most cherished memories at the club was Real Madrid’s historic “La Décima” Champions League title in 2014—the club’s 10th European crown—where his pivotal performances in midfield helped change the course of the modern era for Real.

Although Modrić is leaving Real Madrid, his football journey is not yet over. He has signed with AC Milan on a one-year contract, with the possibility of extending for another season. The move was confirmed by Milan’s new coach, Massimiliano Allegri. It is believed that Modrić wants to continue competing at the highest level and possibly make a final appearance for Croatia at the 2026 World Cup in North America.

As he begins this new chapter in Italy, Modrić leaves behind an irreplaceable legacy in Madrid. More than just a footballer, he became a symbol of resilience, elegance, and loyalty. His name will forever be etched into Real Madrid’s history books, not just for the silverware, but for the heart and soul he gave to the club.

In his final words as a Madridista, Modrić said, “I’ll always be part of this family. Real Madrid is, and always will be, my home.”
