The Atlanta Braves were counting on a pitcher with maybe the most unfortunate name in baseball.
Scott Blewett, that is. Pronounced like “blew it.”
On Thursday, Blewett got four outs and allowed five runners to score after three hits, two walks and three home runs allowed.
The Diamondbacks scored seven runs in the ninth inning to beat the Braves, 11-10. Ketel Marte, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Alek Thomas all took Blewett deep.
After the game, Atlanta designated Blewett for assignment, removing him from the 40-man roster.
In his stead, the Braves are calling up franchise legend Craig Kimbrel, who hasn’t appeared in a game for Atlanta since 2014.
Blewett, 29, joined the Braves earlier this season after both the Twins and then the Orioles had each DFA’d him, too.
Before Thursday, Blewett had been very good. He entered the day with a 2.25 ERA (now 3.91 after getting shelled).
Blewett didn’t have any minor league options left, though, so Atlanta became the third team to DFA him this season. He may very well be claimed on waivers again despite the rough outing.
