Alejandro Villanueva is widely known for his career as a left tackle in the NFL, primarily with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but his story is far more profound due to his distinguished military service. Before stepping onto the football field, Villanueva served as an officer in the U.S. Army and was a member of the elite 75th Ranger Regiment. His military background is marked by incredible acts of bravery, the most notable of which earned him the Bronze Star Medal with Valor, one of the military’s highest awards for heroism in combat.
Villanueva’s journey began at the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he played football and graduated in 2010. Upon commissioning, he became an Army Ranger, a role demanding exceptional physical and mental endurance as well as leadership skills. His first deployment took him to Afghanistan in 2011, during the height of intense fighting against Taliban insurgents.
During this deployment, Villanueva’s unit was tasked with a dangerous mission in the volatile region. In the course of this operation, his team came under heavy enemy fire from Taliban fighters. The ambush resulted in multiple casualties, with three soldiers critically wounded in the firefight. It was in this moment of chaos and danger that Villanueva’s courage shone brightest.
Despite the intense gunfire and the perilous situation, Villanueva immediately took action to save his fellow soldiers. He personally carried the most severely wounded soldier, Private First Class Jesse Dietrich, to safety. They found refuge inside a nearby mosque where medics could tend to the wounded. However, as enemy forces continued to press their attack, it became necessary to relocate to an even safer position.
Villanueva led the effort to move all three casualties under constant enemy fire. He carried one wounded soldier on his shoulders while directing the others to ensure the unit’s safety. His leadership and physical strength under fire were critical in preventing further loss of life. Unfortunately, Pfc. Dietrich later died from his injuries, but the other two soldiers survived thanks in large part to Villanueva’s heroic actions.
For his extraordinary bravery, leadership, and selflessness under fire, Alejandro Villanueva was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with a “V” device. The “V” denotes valor, highlighting that the award was given for acts of heroism in combat rather than for meritorious service alone. This honor reflects Villanueva’s willingness to risk his life for his comrades and embodies the highest ideals of military service.
After completing his military service, Villanueva pursued his dream of playing professional football. He joined the NFL and quickly became known not only for his athletic ability but also for his character and discipline shaped by his military experience.
