The big names of the Hamburg Open have abandoned the tournament, with its strongest players Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti among those who withdrew. The surprise is that the organization convinced none other than Alexander Zverev to join the lineup of the tournament prior to Roland Garros.
Tournaments played the week before a Grand Slam are always subject to last-minute changes, especially regarding the biggest names on the Tour. However, Hamburg has lamented a massive drop-out of figures, which completely decimated the tournament’s lineup.
The ATP 500 had Jannik Sinner (No. 1) and Lorenzo Musetti (No. 9) as its main players, although both Italians withdrew from the tournament after reaching the semifinals at the Rome Open, seeking rest in the week leading up to Roland Garros.
They joined names like Holger Rune (No. 10), Tommy Paul (No. 12) – also a semifinalist in Rome – and Stefanos Tsitsipas (No. 19) in the massive withdrawals from the tournament. This means that the four main title favorites will no longer be in the tournament, in addition to the withdrawal of the two-time Grand Slam runner-up Tsitsipas.
The tournament managed to mitigate the drop in the draw and please the local public with none other than Alexander Zverev included in the tournament. The local player had not registered and was planning to rest this week to prepare for the French Open in the best possible way. However, the massive withdrawals led the organization to negotiate with Zverev to secure his presence in the tournament.
