The College Basketball transfer portal closes on Wednesday meaning that any player looking to find their next school needs to enter the transfer portal by days end. Earlier in the transfer portal cycle, Matt McMahon and his staff worked hard to keep its Freshmen on board announcing that both Robert Miller and Curtis Givens would return on the same day.

While the plan was to get both back on campus, in this transfer portal era, anything can change within moments and as the transfer portal draws to a close, there’s clearly a shift in Givens’ plans or the LSU Basketball team’s plans.

LSU Guard Curtis Givens enters the transfer portal at the last minute

On Wednesday Morning, Curtis Givens III entered his name into the transfer portal at the last moment after announcing he’d be back earlier this offseason.

This season for LSU, Curtis Givens III averaged 4.8 points per game, 1.7 rebounds per game, and 1.6 assist per game in 18.3 minutes per game. The former Top-50 recruit was tasked with running the offense at times but, never was able to make a massive impact on the offensive end. The LSU Basketball team now loses 2 of 3 pieces from Matt McMahon’s 2024 signing class which isn’t the best for building a program.

After losing Vyctorius Miller and now Curtis Givens III, it’s alarming that LSU hasn’t been able to retain or develop its Freshman talent, which will be something to eye going forward. In this new era of College Basketball, rosters will look less familiar each season, and the LSU Basketball team will be made up of nearly all transfers in 2025-26.

Why Curtis Givens III leaving may be a positive for the LSU Tigers

While Curtis Givens III is a loss for the LSU Basketball team it shouldn’t be a massive disappointment for Tigers fans as LSU could look to add a high impact player with the additional roster spot. The Tigers have already cracked the final four for Freshman star Blake Harper and has contacted several other exciting players in the transfer portal which could put the Tigers in line for an exciting finish to this transfer cycle.
