Breaking: Virginia Tech QB Officially Enter Transfer Portal Today

Virginia Tech’s quarterback roster has experienced significant changes during the NCAA’s spring transfer portal window, which runs from April 16 to April 25. Redshirt freshman Davi Belfort is among the latest to enter the portal, joining a growing list of Hokies seeking opportunities elsewhere.

Belfort, a promising quarterback from South Florida, redshirted in 2024 and retains four years of eligibility. His decision to transfer is likely influenced by the competitive depth chart at Virginia Tech, where Kyron Drones and William “Pop” Watson III have solidified their positions as the top quarterbacks for the upcoming 2025 season. Additionally, the arrival of two incoming freshmen, Kelden Ryan and A.J. Brand, has further intensified the competition for playing time.

Belfort’s departure is part of a broader trend of roster changes for the Hokies. Redshirt freshman offensive tackle Web Davidson and redshirt sophomore center Caleb Nitta have also entered the transfer portal. Davidson did not see playing time in 2024, while Nitta appeared in three games and started at center in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. These moves come amid adjustments to the offensive line following the hiring of new offensive line coach Matt Moore, who has brought in three players from West Virginia to bolster the unit.

Adding to the list of departures, twin brothers Jayden and Jorden McDonald have also entered the transfer portal. Jayden, a redshirt senior linebacker, played in 25 games for the Hokies, recording 50 tackles, including four for loss and one sack. Jorden, a redshirt senior defensive end, appeared in 32 games, tallying 11 tackles, including three for loss and 1.5 sacks. Both players have one year of eligibility remaining and have expressed gratitude to the Virginia Tech community, stating that Blacksburg will always feel like home.

Despite these departures, Virginia Tech’s quarterback room remains strong. Kyron Drones, who started nine games in 2024, and William “Pop” Watson III, who stepped up during Drones’ injury absence, are both returning for the 2025 season. Drones led the team with 1,562 passing yards and 10 touchdowns, while Watson contributed 400 passing yards and a touchdown in his appearances.

The Hokies have also been active in the transfer market, securing commitments from two five-star quarterbacks and a four-star tight end. These high-profile signings are expected to enhance the team’s offensive capabilities and provide depth to the roster.

As the spring transfer portal window progresses, Virginia Tech continues to navigate the evolving college football landscape, balancing player departures with strategic acquisitions to strengthen the team for the upcoming season.
