In a remarkable and selfless gesture, newly-appointed Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson has made headlines off the field by donating the entirety of his $1.8 million performance bonus and endorsement income to charities and nonprofit organizations supporting homelessness relief across the city of Chicago and the Midwest.
The announcement came via a statement released early Monday morning by the Bears organization, which praised Johnson’s decision as a reflection of the culture and values he hopes to instill both within the team and throughout the broader community.
“This city has welcomed me with open arms,” Johnson said in the statement. “I believe in using whatever platform and privilege I have to uplift those around me. Chicago is facing a very real homelessness crisis, and this is one way I can contribute to the solutions.”
Johnson’s $1.8 million was reportedly split among several major local and national nonprofits, including Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, The Night Ministry, Youth Futures, and the National Alliance to End Homelessness. Smaller grassroots organizations, shelters, and food banks in underserved neighborhoods will also receive portions of the donation.
This move comes just months after Johnson was officially hired as head coach of the Bears in January, following his widely-praised stint as offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions. Known for his innovative offensive schemes and his leadership on and off the field, Johnson’s transition to head coach was met with high expectations. Now, with this donation, he’s making it clear that his leadership extends beyond football.
Players, fans, and analysts alike have taken to social media to celebrate Johnson’s decision, with many calling it “inspiring,” “humble,” and “a true example of servant leadership.”
Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, the team’s top draft pick and presumed future franchise star, posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Coach Johnson leads with his heart. This is bigger than football. Proud to play for someone like him.”
In addition to the financial donation, Johnson has pledged his time and presence to work directly with several of the organizations he’s supporting. According to his representatives, he plans to organize team-led community outreach events, including holiday food drives, shelter-building initiatives, and mentorship programs.
Local nonprofits have expressed gratitude, noting that Johnson’s contributions will not only help fund programs but also bring awareness and visibility to issues often overlooked.
“He’s setting a new bar—not just for coaches, but for public figures everywhere,” said Diane Rauner, executive director of The Night Ministry. “To see someone at his level take this kind of action gives people hope. It reminds us that change is possible.”
As the Bears prepare for a new era under Johnson’s leadership, it’s clear that his vision for success includes far more than wins and championships. In his words: “We play for more than ourselves. We play for Chicago.”
